Syracuse jazz singer and songwriter Maria De Angelis, backed by the Westminster Express, will perform an evening of bossa nova songs popularized in the early 1960’s by Brazilian musicians Antonio Carlos Jobim, João and Astrud Gilberto, and American greats Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra. The show, “Black Beans & Pink Popcorn – A Night of Bossa Nova” will run one night only, Saturday, January 19, 2008. De Angelis will sing and play guitar for two sets of these great Brazilian standards, at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m., at Jazz Central in downtown Syracuse.

“This past year I’ve dedicated myself, as a guitarist, to learning this music,” says De Angelis. “Many listeners are already familiar with ‘The Girl From Ipanema.’ If it hadn’t been for the Beatles’ arrival in the U.S. in 1965, probably we’d all still be listening to this music. Luckily for me, my talented musician neighbors on Westminster Avenue share my passion for the hypnotic rhythms and gorgeous melodies of bossa nova.”

De Angelis will be joined by singers Hanna Richardson and Elisa Macedo Dekaney, bassist Phil Flanigan, and percussionist Josh Dekaney on January 19th. “And I had to find myself a saxophonist in the vein of Stan Getz,” says De Angelis. “Of course that would be Joe Carello.”
