The Post Standard,
March 4, 2003. review by Mark Bialczak : Syracuse jazz singer
Maria De Angelis has so much to say that she put out two discs at
once. This Ones For O is a love letter to her year-old
daughter, Olivia. Cupids Got a Mean Streak attacks
romance in two languages, a tribute to her husband, Pierre Frison.
"The original songs,
many co-written by De Angelis and Syracuse piano player Phil Klein,
hit the right jazz mark every time. Recorded in New York City with
a great band of Michael Kanan on piano, Neal Miner on bass and Tim
Pleasant on drums, both discs show off De Angelis rich voice
to the fullest.
Syracuse New Times,
Feb. 14-20, 2002, mentioned in a music review by Allen Czelusniak
as "one of the area's fine jazz vocalists."
Syracuse New Times,
December 20-27, 2000, review by Allen Czelusniak, (under "Slick
Discs: Three jazz CDs reflect a vibrant local scene")
Excerpts:
"To truly appreciate
the vocal jazz of Maria De Angelis, the proper atmosphere needs
to accompany it. . . . For Nothing, De Angelis teamed up
with 73-year-old Syracuse pianist, songwriter, and man of a thousand
melodies, Phil Klein. The two penned seven of the 13 songs on
the disc, blending Klein's lively and meandering melodies, De
Angelis' expressive singing and lyrical clarity, and the understated
percussion of Tim Pleasant on the drums. . . .
"De Angelis .
. . demonstrates fine phrasing on and a lovely lilt on 'Dream
a Little Dream of Me' and an especially convincing delivery in
French of 'Parfum d'Ete.' The song benefits from sparse drumming
and long rests from pianist Kanan, leaving plenty of space for
De Angelis' work as an evocative chanteuse. . . .
"Nothing Is
Forever sounds good and looks good from the start. . . . The
sonic balance of this recording exceeds that of most local releases.
. . . The disc rivals many national releases in terms of polish.
Excerpts:
"Maria De Angelis
and Phil Klein have a good thing going. The dynamic between jazz
singer De Angelis and songwriter Klein punctuates De Angelis'
debut disc, Nothing Is Forever, with playful tension. .
. .
"De Angelis' band
mates, when she lived in Manhattan, pianist Michael Kanan, bassist
Neal Miner and drummer Tim Pleasant, lift the album to great heights,
too.
"The De Angelis-Klein
collaboration 'Time & Space' spans generation with its spunk
and spirit. In another interesting twist, De Angelis' very-pleasing
voice tackles the pair's original melody in French and English
for 'Parfum d'Ete' and 'Summer's Scent.' . . .
"Play it when
you want to ride in a sporty jazz vehicle propelled by twin engines
of intelligent composition and lyrical skills."
